ABOUT midian
as with most dreams, midian was just an idea scratched out in an old notebook. in reality, it was an accumulation of years and years of learning, competing, fighting, traveling, coaching, and purchasing thousands of dollers worth of video instructionals, books, and privates. even to this day Fernando Rodriguez seeks out new training information and travels for seminars. he is on a neverending mission to become the best he can be and forge an easier path for his students to begin their own unique jiujitsu journey. He has spent decades finding the best approach to accellerate learning for his students and uses tried and true methods of ecological teaching that speak for itself on the mats. his teaching style evolves as he finds better, more efficient methods to help you learn. the sport of jiujitsu is constantly evolving and so must the teaching methods.
midian is an environMENT where the young athlete and the old hobbiest can come together and learn at their own pace. Though our walls are literally covered with belts and medals, we do not consider ourselves a “competition” school. The four most important things to coach are to let the lessons of jiujitsu improve your life outside of the gym, that you come and challenge yourself to grow, that you become a better athlete and person because of it, and that you forge lifelong friendships in your journey. if you want to compete, we would be thrilled, but you will never be forced to. coach fernando believes that jiujitsu is so much more than a few medals hanging on your wall.
we encourage cross training - we will never tell you where you can and cannot train. We actively visit our friends at 10th planet san antonio to train, hit open mats, and compete against. coach fernando after recieving his black belt in brazilian jiujitsu, sought out another challenge at 10th planet jiujitsu and began yet another journey of learning. you can find him teaching and filling in for the other coaches at 10th planet, his second home. our friends at renzo gracie and rcj machado graciously have us for open mats and training sessions. we love to drop in at other local schools to learn from the talented black belts. we are not an old school dojo from the nineties, we seek knowlege everywhere we can. the more friends we make, the more training partners we gain!
we have super cool midian gear, but we never make you wear only our branded apparel. everyone is unique and so is everyone’s training gear, have a bright orange gi you want to wear for class? that’s cool with us! want to wear an origin branded rashguard to spar? no problem! clean gear is our only uniform.
coach fernando always jokes that he will never be rich. “i’m, not a salesman, i just teach jiujitsu”. His passion for this martial art shines through in his classes. He knows jiujitsu can change your life, you just need to take the first step onto the mats.
