frequently asked questions

I AM OLDER, IS IT TOO LATE TO START JIUJITSU?

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO START JIUJITSU! OUR CLASSES ARE DESIGNED FOR ALL LEVELS. IF YOU HAVE LIMITED MOBILITY, OLD INJURIES, OR GET TIRED QUICKLY, NOT TO FEAR! COACH WILL TAILOR THE CLASS TO YOUR NEEDS AND WORK TO BUILD YOU UP AT YOUR OWN PACE.

i don’t have training gear, WHAT DO I WEAR TO class?

MOST OF OUR STUDENTS WEAR A RASHGUARD, SPATS, OR GRAPPLING SHORTS, BUT PRETTY MUCH ANY WORKOUT CLOTHES YOU HAVE WILL BE PERFECT TO START OUT WITH. fitted t-shirts and shorts will work just fine. ONCE YOU GET MORE SERIOUS AND WANT TO INVEST IN BETTER TRAINING ATTIRE, ASK OUR MEMBERS WHERE THEY GET THEIRS or wait for our training gear pre-orders!

IF I SIGN UP AT MIDIAN, CAN I STILL GO TRAIN OTHER PLACES?

OF COURSE, ANY GYM THAT DOESN’T ALLOW YOU TO TRAIN AT OTHER PLACES IS A RED FLAG. OUR MEMEBERS TRAVEL AND HAVE FRIENDS AT OTHER GYMS HERE IN TOWN AND WE WANT YOU TO GET AS MUCH CROSS TRAINING IN AS YOU WANT! COACH FERNANDO HIMSELF TRAINS AND TEACHES AT OTHER GYMS. WE ASK THAT IF YOU ARE VISITING OTHER GYMS THAT YOU ARE RESPECTFUL to all of the members AND follow the rules of the gym you are visiting.

I WANT TO COMPETE, HOW LONG dO I HAVE TO TRAIN FOR my first TOURNAMENT?

DEPENDS ON HOW QUICKLY YOU LEARN AND BECOME SKILLED. TYPICALLY, COACH PREFERS that YOU TRAIN ABOUT 1-3 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR FIRST COMPETITION. HE WANTS YOU TO HAVE A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE SPORT AND THE BASIC SKILLSET TO DEFEND, ESCAPE, AND KEEP YOURSELF SAFE.

DOES COACH TEACH PRIVATE LESSONS?

YES, HE DOES! SOMETIMES WE ALL NEED A BIT OF EXTRA HELP TROUBLESHOOTING MOVEMENTS OR GETTING PAST A PLATEAU SO HAVING ONE ON ONE HELP CAN HELP A LOT. HE CHARGES $100 FOR AN HOUR LESSON. yOU ALSO HAVE THE OPTION TO BRING UP TO 3 TRAINING PARTNERS AND SPLIT THE COST.

I WANT TO LEARN JIUJITSU, BUT I DON’T WANT TO ROLL/SPAR, CAN I STILL DO CLASS?

ABSOLUTELY! COACH WILL NEVER MAKE ANYONE SPAR THAT DOESN’T FEEL READY. THE LAST PART OF CLASS IS USED FOR ROLLS, BUT YOU CAN OPT TO LEAVE CLASS EARLY, SIT AND WATCH, OR ASK YOUR TRAINING PARTER TO DRILL THE MOVEments you learned in class INSTEAD!

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET GOOD AT JIUJITSU?

THIS CAN GREATLY VARY FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL. THE FIRST YEAR OF JIUJITSU CAN BE A BIT FRUSTRATING, THERE IS SO MUCH TO LEARN. TYPICALLY, AFTER 6-12 MONTHS YOU START PUTTING THINGS TOGETHER AND begin feeling more confident. THE MORE CLASSES YOU ATTEND, THE FASTER YOU PROGRESS. WHAT YOU PUT IN YOU WILL GET OUT.

NOt at all! WE DO HAVE LOTS OF COOL BRANDED MIDIAN GEAR TO PURCHASE, BUT a school “uniform” is not MANDATORY. HAVE A CRAZY ORANGE GI? WEAR IT. GOT A COOL RASHGUARD THAT YOU LOVE? WEAR IT. WE JUST ASK THAT IF YOU DO CHOOSE MIDIAN AS YOUR HOME GYM, THAT YOU DON’T REP ANOTHER SCHOOL’S LOGO. clean, safe gear is our only uniform.

DO I HAVE TO WEAR a school gi?

DO I HAVE TO COMPETE?

NO WAY! EVERYONE DOES JIUJITSU FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL REASONS AND COMPETING MAY NOT BE IN THE CARDS FOR YOU. IF YOU JUST WANT TO TRAIN TO GET MORE FIT, DEVELOP SELF-DEFENSE SKILLS, AND LEARN THE MARTIAL ART FOR FUN THAT’S PERFECT! SOME OF OUR MEMEBERS STARTED JIUJITSU FOR WEIGHTLOSS THEN ENDED UP WANTING TO COMPETE AFTER TRAINING FOR AWHILE. IT’S YOUR JOURNEY, YOU DECIDE WHERE IT TAKES YOU, COACH IS JUST YOUR GUIDE.
